Day 4 – Personal SWOT Analysis

Do you know what a SWOT Analysis is?

When was the last time you analyzed your life?

Would you like a tool to be able to identify areas to improve and remind you of your strengths?

Today’s tool will be a SWOT analysis.

This tool will require you to analyse your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.  A SWOT analysis is usually used within a business setting, but it can also be used to analyse your personal life. You can use this tool when you are thinking of making a change in your life: perhaps for a career move, starting your own business or simply to analyse your current situation.

What Is A SWOT ANALYSIS?

A SWOT analysis is the study undertaken by an organization or person to identify its internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as its external opportunities and threats. A very common tool used in business.

Time To Take Action

Step 1 – Under each of the headings think about, identify and write down 3 Strengths, 3 Weaknesses, 3 Opportunities and 3 Threats. However, if you have more time on your hands, why not have a go at doing a full SWOT analysis?

Step 2 – Once you have completed your SWOT, reflect on the following questions:

  1. What does this information tell me?

  2. What actions can I take to improve a weakness, take up an opportunity or steps to take to managing or overcoming a threat?

Example of a SWOT ANALYSISStrength 

  1. What are your skills and talents?

  2. What are you very good at?

  3. What would others say your strengths are?

  4. What achievement are you proud of? (e.g educational, social)

  5. What are your values?

Weakness

  1. What areas are you not confident in?

  2. What would you consider as a negative habit?

  3. What do you think holds you back?

  4. What do you consider to be areas of weakness in your life?

  5. What would others say your weaknesses are?

Opportunities

  1. You have the ability to change your weakness into opportunities.

  2. What support is available to you from external sources?

  3. Do you have a mentor or access to mentors?

  4. Are there opportunities within your work place to grow or change positions?

  5. What are your opportunities for growth?

Threats

  1. What obstacles do you face?

  2. Can any of your weaknesses lead to a threat?

  3. Is your current environment or social circle one that encourages you to develop?

  4. Are there any threats within your work place? (E.g to your position, company cuts)

Benefits Of This Tool

  1. Carrying out a SWOT will allow you to identify areas of improvement.

  2. It can highlight and remind you of your strengths and weakness

  3. Helps you to identify areas of development.

Implementation is key, once you have identified an area that you would like to work on, it will require you to take action in order to bring about a change.
