What do you value?
What is important to you?
What are your values?
When was the last time you thought about your values?
“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.”
Roy E. Disney

Why are values important? Today’s Tool is Exploring Your Values. Knowing your values is important because when your actions are in line with your values there will be a feeling of contentment. Your core values define you, get to know what you value, in order to live within your values. Before we start let me just make it clear that our values are not our goals; there is a difference. A goal is a means to an end, something that you want to achieve or do in the future. A value provides an ongoing direction for your life, in the present moment.
What are values?
First off let me start by saying that we all have values. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live your life and work. “Values regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something”
Many people don’t know what their values are. Society says we are to value X and people follow, without questioning. Do you know what your top five values are? When your Values & Behaviour match up it equals a feeling of contentment. However when your Values & Behaviour do not match, this could equal unhappy feelings.
Remember: There’s no point in fixing the external if you are not willing to focus on the internal.
Time To Take Action
Step 1- Starting questions
Identify your most proudest moments? This may help give you an idea of your values.
What do you regret the most? This could help you to see what is important to you.
Let get started
Step 2– Grab a pen and a note pad, make a list of the things that you value.
Step 3 – Time to refine the list and find out what you value the most.
Refine your list to your top 10 values from the list you made above.
Then chose your top 5 values.
For example my top values are personal development, loyalty, family, happiness and freedom.
Step 3: Time to ask yourself some questions
It has been said actions speak louder than words, so ask yourself does your actions match your values?
Step 4 – Time to take it a step further
Define your values – Give each value a meaning, add emotions to it and make it memorable.
For me, personal development means the discovery of who I am; It means knowing that there is always more to learn about myself. Personal development also means living a life of purpose and working towards achieving your full potential.
